Located on Brabawooloong Country (one of the five clans of the Gunaikurnai), Howitt Park sits beside the Princess Highway in Bairnsdale.
In this park is a canoe tree. The River Red Gum grows beside the Mitchell River and has a long canoe shaped scar from here the men had peeled the bark away from the tree. The scar is believed to be around 170 years old and is protected under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006.
